Automata

The most basic definition is: Mechanical figures or contrivances constructed to move as if by their own power, generally by intricate hidden mechanisms. It is truly an art form most closely related to sculpture and the precursor of the modern day robot. Made of wood and brass, these intricate sculptures mimic organic movement.
The art of creating automata dates as far back as the 15th - 18th Century or earlier. In the 1400's examples of truly remarkable automata were produced. One example is by famous artist and inventor Leonardo da Vinci who made a lion in honor of king Louis XII. Said to have advanced towards him, stopped, opened its chest with a claw and pointed to the fleur-de-lis coat of arms of France.
Automata brags a loyal following of collectors and builders as it amazes all of us with it's intricate movements and often comic relief. Disney Land's 'Small World' exhibit bosts this type of display as well as making it to the big screen in the movie 'Shrek'.
